Sign Of The Times of the Day: A 59-year-old North Carolina man with several serious medical problems, including an undiagnosed growth, informed the teller at an RBC Bank in Gastonia that he was committing an unarmed robbery. His demands: 1 dollar and three years in prison.

James Verone told Charlotte’s WCNC-TV that he was unemployed and broke, and thought his only option was to go to jail where he would receive health care and have a roof over his head. “I’m sort of a logical person and that was my logic,” he told the station.

Unfortunately for Verone, the sum of money he requested from the teller was not enough to constitute a bank robbery, and the amount of jail time he faces is considerably less than he would have liked.

This is what happens in a system that cares more for the condemned than the innocent. Also: this would be a great film.
